Holidays are meant for building traditions and memories with your loved ones. Some like to decorate their trees over the Thanksgiving holiday, some like to go caroling, visit the National tree in DC (or at other locations), drive around and look at holiday lights in neighborhoods, etc. The traditions are endless and the memories are priceless.
Last year while post-holiday shopping, my mom and I found an adorable garland Advent calendar. We bought it with no real idea in mind, but have quickly come to the idea that this will be a new tradition for H. The stockings are small, but big enough for a small piece of candy, coin, or token. We found some simple, (hopefully) non-breakable ornaments at Walmart for less than $1 for a pack of 6-9 ornaments, as well as a few other items I found in the $1 section at Target. I filled each stocking with a small ornament or item and wrapped the garland around a small tree in our basement. My idea is that instead of candy (but who am I kidding, we will probably end up doing that too when she is a bit older), she can use this Advent calendar to build up her excitement of Christmas and all of the magic and wonder that surrounds it – receiving a tiny surprise each day of the month. When she is a bit older, I will probably resort to coins only, encouraging her to save them in her piggy bank or donate to one of the bell ringers outside of the grocery store. (If you read an earlier post about her birthday party this past spring, you will know that we are huge proponents of giving back, and starting this mindset at a very early age.)
With today being the 1st of the month, I’m excited to see how this tradition goes with H, and I hope that she is as excited as I am.
